Need to escape the demands of the present for a brief time? Read some inspirational historical fiction romance books, They are clean, written by acclaimed Christian authors, and will transport you to a variety of time periods. Does anyone else remember those old Calgon commercials, where a stressed-out lady longs for a relaxing bubble bath? “Calgon, take me away!” was her famous line. Maybe you are in need of a relaxing break, and I’ve got the perfect solution: historical fiction. It’s one of my favorite ways to unwind. If reading historical fiction appeals to you as well, read on for a list of my favorite titles and authors.

Author Laura Frantz has written a variety of tales to tempt readers. Her stories are set in the American Colonial period. My favorite historical fiction book by this author so far is The Mistress of Tall Acre. In the harsh economic conditions following the Revolutionary War, Sophie Menzies is determined to keep her family farm intact. Faced with few options, will Sophie be forced to marry for convenience to survive? Find out in this faith-filled story with unexpected plot twists.

Regency Romance at its Best

Beginning in 2007, with The Lady of Milkweed Manor, Julie Klassen’s Regency romances are inspiring and engaging. Her stories are filled with likeable heroines who have challenges to overcome. Faced with unexpected circumstances, the characters and plot lines draw the reader in. Of course, the course of true love rarely runs smoothly. The author weaves a tale of faith and hope amidst trying circumstances. You may decide to begin with Klassen’s earliest title, or get caught up in her more recent Ivy Hill trilogy. Whichever you choose, I hope you get the chance to sample one of these inspiring books.

Victorious Victorian-Era Tales

As the debut book in her Gresham Chronicles series, Lawana Blackwell’s The Widow of Larkspur Inn provides readers with a glimpse into village life in Victorian England. Recently widowed, Julia Hollis must make her way to the small village of Gresham and take ownership of The Larkspur Inn. Along with her children, Julia must find a way to make the best of her new circumstances. Readers will get caught up in the family’s day-to-day struggles in this uplifting series.

Adventure on the American Frontier
